Slow Down and Sink Into Your Body
This world moves fast.
Oftentimes your nervous system speeds up as a way of coping with all the stimuli around you.
Before you know it, your body is so ramped up that you become distant from it.
This distance between your mind and your body is what keeps you from feeling present.
When you don’t feel present, it’s really hard to experience pleasure. Stress is the antithesis of pleasure, and yet it can be so hard to turn off.
But it’s not always a matter of turning it off. The saying “The only way out is through” rings true here. You can’t just turn off your nervous system. It’s there to protect you.
Instead of turning it off, you have to feel what’s coming up in a safe and protected way and move that energy through your body.
How do you start?
The first step is to take inventory. What’s going on with you right now?
Check in with yourself.
Feel your feet planted on the Earth.
Sense any places you’re holding tension in your legs.
Allow your pelvis to sink deeper into your seat or towards the ground.
What’s going on in your stomach?
How does your heart feel?
Can you release your jaw? Your tongue? Your lips?
What mental tension is there? Can you let it slide out and off your head, and back down to the Earth?
Take a deep, deep belly breath. Let it out.
Now that’s better.
Notice you were holding extra tension, and what shifted after that little practice?
Slowing down and sinking into your body is a constant practice. It’s also a matter of self-preservation.
You think of self-preservation as preventative medicine. Knowing what things cause energy leaks and keep you from feeling present.
How can you monitor or minimise things like:
- Excess screen time.
- Not saying what’s on your mind.
- Not getting enough sleep and rest.
These “leaks” can be subtle, but that little dissonance may be what’s keeping you from feeling present in your body. You can call this stress.
Stress happens, we have to live our lives. Stress isn’t always a bad thing, either. Sometimes, it serves a purpose.
When it does come up, how will you handle it?
Slowing Down and Sinking In
When you understand how to slow down and live from a more embodied state, stress doesn’t seem to have the same weight as before.
These are some of our favourite ways to slow down and sink in:
Different folks, different strokes. What works for you might not work for another. Try out different tools and see which ones make you feel spacious. Which ones help you slow down and sink in.
