Has sex ever felt a bit… flat?
Like it’s lost its spark.
It happens at the same time, in the same way, following a routine you both know well.
Sometimes it’s fine. Comfortable. Efficient. Other times, it feels like something to tick off, done quickly so you can move on.
Nothing is wrong exactly. But it doesn’t feel particularly alive either.
For many women, this is the point where sexual desire starts to fade, not because they don’t like sex, but because sex no longer feels worth prioritising.
Put bluntly: we get sexually bored.
As a Couples Therapist and Sexologist, this is one of the most common experiences women describe to me in sessions.
They care about their partner. They value intimacy. But sex has become predictable, routine, and mentally disengaging.
Sexual boredom affects more than just sex
Research backs up what I see clinically.
Studies show that sexual boredom is linked to lower sexual satisfaction and lower relationship satisfaction, particularly for women in long-term relationships. When sex stops feeling engaging, enjoyment drops, and desire often follows.
Why variety helps
Variety and novelty gently interrupt autopilot.
They bring attention back into the body. They wake up curiosity. They help sex feel alive again.
As a sexologist, here’s what I suggest
Research suggests that introducing around twelve varied or novel sexual experiences across a year, roughly one a month, is associated with higher sexual satisfaction and stronger relationship connection.
Play with sensation
Light a massage candle and make touch the main event. Let the warm oil drip, spread, and linger. Take your time. Touch places you don’t usually start with. When sensation leads instead of routine, sex stops feeling predictable and starts feeling indulgent.
Change how things begin
Instead of jumping straight into sex, start with slow, sensual massage using Yinn’s Body Oil. Let hands wander. Linger longer than usual. When intimacy begins differently, everything that follows tends to feel different too.
Switch up the feel
Trying a different lubricant can completely change how touch feels. Yinn’s water-based lube offers a soft, silky glide, while their oil-based lube feels richer and more luxurious, perfect for longer, unhurried play. Sometimes a small sensory shift is all it takes to make familiar touch feel new again.
Move it somewhere unexpected
Sex doesn’t have to live exclusively in the bedroom. A different room, surface, or setting can instantly change the energy. And if you’re worried about mess, Yinn’s Splash Blanket lets you relax and enjoy yourselves without thinking twice.
Introduce one new element
You don’t need to overhaul everything. One new element, a glass or crystal pleasure wand, a slower pace, a different rhythm, is often enough. Keep it curious, not performative. Fun beats impressive every time.
